الابستمولوجيا كلمة مشتقة من كلمتين يونانيتين هما episteme وتعني معرفة و logos وتعني نظرية، والابستمولوجية فرع من فروع الفلسفة يهتم بطبيعة المعرفة الإنسانية، وأنواعها وإمكانيتها ومصادرها ومجالها وحدودها. وتسعى الابستمولوجيا إلى الإجابة على جملة من الأسئلة يقع في موضوع الصدارة منها ما يلي: 1- ما المعرفة؟ 2- ما الذي يمكن أن نعرفه؟ 3- كيف نعرف ما نعرفه؟ 4- كيف تكون اعتقاداتنا مسوغة أو مقبولة؟ تقتضي الإجابة على السؤال تحديد مفهوم المعرفة وتتطلب الإجابة على السؤال الثاني بيان مجال المعرفة وأنواعها مثل المعرفة الحسية والمعرفة الأولية والمعرفة الدينية والمعرفة الأخلاقية ونحو ذلك، وما دامت المعرفة ممكنة فهذا يعني أننا نستطيع تفنيد حجج النزعة الشكية في المعرفة، ويتعلق السؤال الثالث بمصادر المعرفة المتنوعة وهي العقل والتجربة والحدس والوجدان، وتضيف المعرفة في التصور الإسلامي إلى هذا المصدر مصدرا آخر هي الوحي، والسؤال الرابع ينصب على مفهوم التسويغ (تبرير) الابستمولوجي.
