كتب هذا البحث التاريخي الأستاذ دانييل ماك كول أستاذ الدراسات الإنسانية، والعضو المشارك في وضع الدراسات الإفريقية بجامعة بوسطن ماسا تشوستس بأميركا، وقد عرض فيه أقدم الروايات التاريخية وأحدثها عن تأسيس سجلماسة وغانة وناقشها، وقد نشر النص الإنجليزي لهذا البحث ضمن البحوث التاريخية التي أنجزتها (الجمعية التاريخية لغانة) سنة 1961. ولما أتيح لي الإطلاع عليه أحسست بميل قوي إلى نقله إلى اللغة العربية رغبة مني في أن أضع أمام القارئ المغربي نموذجا من نماذج الدراسات التاريخية القائمة على الاستقراء والمقارنة والاستنتاج نصف ميدانه جزء من أجزاء هذه البلاد التي تنتظر من أبنائها الدارسين أن يجلو تاريخها في صورة قائمة على أساس من البحث العلمي الدقيق، وبما أن البحث يتعلق بتاريخ مدينتين افريقيتين إحداهما مغربية (سجلماسة) والأخرى سودانية (غانة)، فقد يجد فيه القارئ المغربي حافزا للاهتمام بالبحث عما كان بين المغرب وبين ما وراءه من بلاد افريقيا السوداء من علاقة قوية في الماضي أنشأها أبطال الإسلام ودعاته الأولون، وإن اثارة البحث عن هذه العلاقة قد يكون احدى الصوى الهادية إلى الطريق الأقوم للوصول إلى ما تسعى اليه اليوم جميع البلاد الافريقية من وحدة تضمن لشعوبها العزة والكرامة والمستقبل الأفضل الذي تنشده..
