يعتبر الإحصاء في كثير من الأحيان أداة من الأدوات التي يستخدمها معظم الناس في حياتهم وعملهم اليومي. فالمتنبئ الجوي والاقتصادي والطبيب والتاجر والمزارع والموظف والباحث .... الخ يستخدمون الإحصاء. وفي مجال العلوم النفسية والتربوية فإن أكثر البحوث تقوم على عمليات التحليل الإحصائي، بل إن الأبحاث الأولى في ميدان علم النفس التربوي اعتمدت على الإحصاء في الكشف عن العلاقات بين الواهر النفسية والتربوية وهذه الأبحاث التي استخدم فيها الإحصاء هي التي مهدت فيما بعد للأبحاث التجريبية في ميدان علوم النفس والتربية. وكذلك فإن الباحث في مجال العلوم الإنسانية والتربوية وغيرها من العلوم يطور أدواته أحيانا لقياس السمات أو الظواهر النفسية أو التربوية. وهذه الأدوات بحاجة إلى الإحصاء للتعرف على خصائصها السكومترية كالصدق والثبات، فالإحصاء يقوم بهذه الوظيفة بالإضافة إلى ذلك فإن أي متخصص في أي مجال من مجالات العلوم لا بد وان يكون ملما بالإحصاء وقوانينه وقواعده وذلك إذا أراد هذا الشخص أن يطلع على ما هو جديد في مجال تخصصه وعادة لا يستطيع أن يطلع على ما هو جديد. إلا إذا اطلع على الدوريات التي تنشر الأبحاث الجديدة، وإذا نظرنا إلى هذه الدوريات نجد أنها مليئة بالجداول والرسوم البيانية والمعالجات والتحليلات الإحصائية، من هنا جاء قولنا بأن الإحصاء ضروري لكل فرد ولكل عالم وباحث.
