تفتحت أعين توفيق الحكيم على عالم الفن مبكراً من نافذة شارع محمد علي الذي كان يمثل كوناً مصغرا لفرق التخت الشرقي والآلاتية وأسطوات العوالم , تركت التجربة آثارها النافذة في نفسة وعقلة للدرجة التي يقرر فيها استلهام نموذج ( الأسطى حميدة الإسكندرية ) التي تعرف عليها في باكر حياته وكانت السبب المباشر في ولعه بالفن وغرامه بالموسيقى والغناء الذي لن يفارقة عمره كله.
في ( راقصة المعبد ) يهدي الحكيم نصيه القصيرين إلى أول من علمتة كلمة ( الفن ) تحضر ( الأسطى حميدة ) في الكتاب كنموذج فني ومعادل موضوعي يطل منه الحكيم على عالم ( العوالم ) والتختجية وفرق محمد علي والآلاتية , في القطعة الأولى التي أسماها ( العوالم ) , وتدور أحداثة في قطار يتجه من محطة مصر إلى الإسكندرية , يقل فرقة تخت شرقي لإحياء مناسبة في منزل أحد كبار الأعيان , ثم يأتي النص الثاني الذي سمي الكتاب باسمه ( راقصة المعبد ) وتنطلق أحداثه أيضا في قطار يتجه من سالزبورج إلى باريس , تتخللة مناوشة عاطفية بين كاتب وراقصة.
تجربة فنية ممتعة غاية في التراث والعمق والبساطة معاً , سجلها الحكيم بحسه المرهف وبراعته المعهودة ورشاقة أسلوبة وصياغاته الحوارية المتقنة.
