يدور موضوع الكتاب حول المشكلة الطائفية، بوصفها من أكثر الأزمات تفجراً في المشرق العربي، وخصوصاً خلال العقود الثلاثة الماضية.
وهذا الكتاب محاولة نقدية جادة ومهمة، يناقش فيها الدكتور "علي أحمد الديري" من البحرين بعض من المرتكزات التي تقوم عليها نزعات البعض العصبوية. وهي محاولة دخل فيها الديري في اختبار القدرة على الخروج من الجماعة ليس كنسق قرابي أو ديني وإنما في الخروج عن السياق الفكري الذي يؤسس للحمة عصبوياتها الدينية.
يستخدم الكاتب ثنائيتين رئيسيتين في دراسته هذه: داخل وخارج ويثير من خلالها إشكالات إحتوائية يتساءل فيها: هل يمكن أن تكون داخل الطائفة وفي الوقت نفسه داخل المدينة الحرة؟ أو هل يمكن أن يكون داخل القبيلة وفي الوقت نفسه داخل الدولة؟
يرينا الكتاب عبر تجربة الكاتب مع ثنائية الخارج والداخل، أن الوجود خارج الطائفة يجعلك تلقائياً داخل فضاء المدينة وداخل فعلها الحر. فكل خروج هو دخول آخر. أنت تخرج من حيز أفقه ضيق لتدخل أفقا أكثر رحابة وأكثر اتساعاً. فمن خارج الطائفة (الفصل1)، إلى داخل المدينة (الفصل 2)، ومنها إلى داخل آخر أكثر تشعبا وتعقيدا: الدولة (الفصل 3)، ثم داخل إنسان هذا المكان الذي يشكل المجتمع (الفصل 4).
دراسة هامة يسعى مؤلفها إلى تحرير الإنسان العربي من قيد الطائفية ومن سلطة سورها ويدخله برفق إلى حيز الدولة، ويوضح له الفرق بين منطق الدولة ومنطق السلطة حتى ينشىء كل فرد دولته الحديثة عبر القوانين التي يرسمها بمنطق عقله واجتماعه البشري ويكون فاعلاً أكثر، ومشاركاً بحرية في صنع القرار.
سيفتح هذا الكتاب درباً، على الآخر بمنطق العلم والدين والعقل، وليس بمنطق الطائفة، ما يجعلنا مهيئين لدخول العالم والإستفادة من تجار الآخرين...
