ليست رواية "لعبة الكريات الزجاجية" من المؤلفات السهلة التي يقرؤها الإنسان على عجل، فهي شيء بين الرواية وبين الكتاب. هي رواية بما التمسه كاتبها فيها من خيال، وما أدخله في تركيبها من عرض لمناظر، وتصوير لشخصيات، وسرد لأحداث، واهتمام بانفعالات وأحاسيس. وهي كتاب في الفلسفة، وفي تاريخ الثقافة وفي التاريخ، وفي الحكمة، تناول فيه الكاتب ثقافة العصر الحاضر بالنقد الرقيق، والتقييم، وخرج من نقده وتقييمه بآراء جديرة بأن يأخذها الإنسان مأخذ الجد، ويتأملها، ويتدبرها ويفيد منها.
ورواية "لعبة الكريات الزجاجية" أعظم مؤلفات هيرمن هيسه وأقواها، وقد عكف هيسه على كتابتها بين عام 1931 وعام 1942، بدأها قبل كارثة استيلاء هتلر على الحكم في ألمانيا بعامين، وأتمها قبل أن تبلغ كارثة الحرب الهتلرية، الحرب العالمية الثانية، بثلاث سنوات، فكانت صيحة العقل في عصر ضاع منه العقل. وكان من الطبيعي أن يمنع الحكم النازي نشرها في ألمانيا، فظهرت الطبعة الأولى في سويسرا، ولم تطبع في ألمانيا إلا بعد نهاية الحرب، في عام 1946.
