يتناول هذا الكتاب ظاهرة "التلويح الحواري" التي شاعت ترجمتها خطأ إلى "الاستلزام الخطابي المحادثي"، منطلقا من إعادة قراءتها في ضوء التراث اللغوي العربي والإسلامي، ولا سيما في كتابات الأصوليين والبلاغيين والنحويين والمناطقة. ويكشف المؤلف عن تقاطعات عميقة بين المفاهيم التداولية الحديثة، كما في نظرية بول غرايس حول التلويح الحواري، وبين مفاهيم تراثية أصيلة مثل "دلالة المنطوق" و "المفهوم" و"المنطوق غير الصريح" و"التعريض."
ويبرز الكتاب أن العلماء العرب لم يكونوا بعيدين عن جوهر الأفكار التي تناولها غرايس ومن تبعه من اللغويين المعاصرين مثل هورن لفنن، باخ، سبيربر وولسن، وريكاناتي، بل إنهم صاغوا مفاهيم قريبة بل موازية لما أصبح يُعرف لاحقا بمصطلحات التداولية .pragmatics ومن الاكتشافات المهمة التي يقدمها الكتاب، أن علماء العرب كانوا واعين منذ وقت مبكر لما يعرف اليوم بظاهرة "التدخل التداولي في المعنى الظاهر pragmatic intrusion into what is said) ").
ويمثل هذا العمل إسهاما رياديا في الدراسات العربية المعاصرة، إذ أنجز في وقت كانت فيه نظرية غرايس غير معروفة في السياق الأكاديمي العربي، باستثناء إشارات مقتضبة لدى بعض الباحثين.
