هذا الكتاب يناقش فترة وحقيبة من حقب التاريخ الوسيط، في النصف الثاني من القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي/ الثامن الهجري، والتي تأثرت فيه موازين القوى الدولية بالهجمة المغولية الثانية والتي تزامنت مع وصول المماليك للحكم في مصر وبلاد الشام بالإضافة إلى اكتمال قوة العثمانيين ليصبوا إلى جانب المماليك الفاعل الإسلامي الثاني على الساحة الدولية، وهو ما تزامن كذلك مع اقتراب نهاية الدولة البيزنطية ، والتي استمر ثِقلُها السياسي والحضاري حاضراً بقوة طوال ما يقرب من عشرة قرون من الزمان.
