قصة فيكتور هوجو عن الظلم والبطولة والحب للبطل جان فالجان، وهو مدان هارب مصمم على ترك ماضيه الإجرامي خلفه. لكن محاولاته لكي يصبح عضواً محترماً في المجتمع تتعرض باستمرار للتهديد: من قبل ضميره، عندما يتم القبض على رجل آخر بدلاً منه بسبب حالة خطأ في تحديد الهوية؛ ومن خلال التحقيقات المتواصلة مع الشرطي العنيد جافيرت. فلا يجب أن يظل فالجان حرًا لنفسه فقط، لأنه أقسم على حماية ابنة فانتين الصغيرة، التي دفعها الفقر إلى الدعارة. بنظرة مقنعة ورحيمة لضحايا المجتمع الفرنسي في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر، فالبؤساء هي رواية على نطاق ملحمي، تنتقل بلا هوادة من عشية معركة واترلو إلى ثورة يوليو عام 1830.
