يعتبر القرن التاسع عشر في الأدب الغربي الفترة الأكثر حيوية ومتعة من كل الفترات، بما أحدث من تأثير خاص، من حيث أنه فترة نشوء العديد من الأشكال الأدبية الحديثة التي تفرعت عنها. فقد تطورت في هذا العصر كل من الرومنطقية والرمزية والواقعية وانعكست جميعها في تيارات الآداب الحديثة.
فضلاً عن ذلك، إن الكثير من المظاهر الاجتماعية والاقتصادية للقرن العشرين قد تمددت أبعادها في القرن التاسع عشر، ويتجلى ذلك بشكل خاص في التأثيرات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية للنمو المطرد في التصنيع الذي بدأ في إنكلترا بأواسط القرن الثامن عشر، فأطلق عليه عهد الثورة الصناعية كما هو معروف. بيد أن من الممكن تمييز تطورات عديدة جرت في ذلك القرن، وبصورة خاصة ما يتعلق بنحو ما يمكن تسميته بالوعي الاجتماعي الذي طرأ في أواسط هذه الفترة ونهايتها...
لذا نجد أن رواية "البؤساء" للكاتب فيكتور هوغو قد تناولت بالتصوير والسرد والنقد لمشاكل اجتماعية واقتصادية وقانونية... الخ، عسى أن يكون الغرض منها حتماً الإصلاح الاجتماعي وتصوير حياة المساكين والفقراء والظلم الذين يتعرضون له على يد الأنظمة والحكومات تساهم في حل مشاكلهم... وهكذا كان.
فقصة "البؤساء" قصة ممتعة ومشوقة، كتبها المؤلف وراعى فيها بعض الأمور التي تثير التشويق والاندفاع لمعرفة الأحداث التالية، إضافة إلى سرد الأمور بتفصيل وصفي للطبيعة والواقع مع الحالات النفسية والانفعالية.. هنا نترك للقارئ التمتع بهذه الأمور عند قراءته للترجمة التي بين أيدينا لهذه القضية والتي جاءت موجزة وبتصريف من قبل المترجم وهدفه تخفيض عدد صفحات صفحاتها الكبير والذي قد يبعد الناس وهماً عن قراءتها ولكن حافظ على تسلسل الأحداث الرئيسية.
