تتناول الدراسة إشكالية مهمة من إشكاليات التاريخ المعاصر في اليمن في أواخر عصر الإمامة المتوكلية، حيث أكدت روايات وشهادات عديدة لأقطاب حركة الأحرار اليمنيين المعارضة عن تشكليهم لجمعية سرية في داخل اليمن بعد انقلاب عام 1955م، بهدف القضاء على حكم أسرة حميد الدين، غير أن هذه الروايات والشهادات كان ينقصها التأصيل والتوثيق، وقد استطاع الباحث عبر التنقيب في وثائق وزارة الخارجية المصرية المودعة بدار الوثائق القومية بالقاهرة الحصول على عدد من الوثائق تؤكد بالفعل تشكيل تلك الجمعية، وقد أطلقت الوثائق عليه اسم "جمعية الأحرار اليمنيين السرية"، وقد تأسست في الثامن عشر من أغسطس 1955، وهى نفس الجمعية التى أطلق عليها البعض اسم "الجمعية الثورية الوطنية الديمقراطية".
