لعبت الجمعيات السرية دورا هاما في تاريخ البشرية، وأثرت تأثيرا عظيم الخطر بعيد المدى، وكانت في بعض الأحيان أداة هائلة من أدوات التغيير والإصلاح والبناء، وفي أحيان أخرى كانت وسيلة من أقوى وسائل الهدم والتدمير، أو هز أركان المجتمع وزعزعة رواسيه، وتفكيك روابطه، وساعدت فب بعض الأحيان الأهداف الكبيرة، والغايات المثلي على التحقيق والظهور والغلبة والانتصار، وفي أحيان أخرى جلبت المصائب الكبيرة وكانت سببا في وقوع الأحداث الجلية، والجرائم المنكرة، والحماقات والسخافات، فليست هى خيرا خالصا ولا شرا محضا، وأنما هى مزيج من الخير والشر، وقد يتغلب فيها عنصر الخير والإصلاح، وقد يعلو فيها باعث الشر والإفساد ، وقد تكون ومجالات للإيمان الصادق والعقيدة الصحيحة، وقد تكون مسرحا للدجل والغش والخداع.
والجمعيات التاريخية التى عرفها التاريخ كثيرة متنوعة، وليس من همى في هذا الكتاب الموجز إحصاؤها واستقصاء تاريخها، وقد اجتزأت بتخير بعض الجمعيات السرية المشهورة وتحريت في الاختيار التنويع والدقة في عرض الحقائق التاريخية والتزام الحيدة والنزاهة.
