يتناول الكتاب صناعة النفط إبان الفترات الإغريقية والرومانية والعصر المتأخر، فضلاً عن تاريخ النفط عند العرب في الجاهلية. ويتناول الكتاب كذلك صناعة النفط في العصور الإسلامية، وتحديداً في العصرين الأموي والعباسي. اعتمد المؤلف في كتابة الكتاب على عددٍ من المصادر باللغتين العربية والإنكليزية تربو على 211 مصدر. كما أعطى المؤلف في الفصل الأول شرحاً لأصول مفردة النفط ومرادفاتها وتنوعها وتطورها في عددٍ من اللغات القديمة ومنها العربية.
