بعد نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى، ومع ازدياد الصراعات الداخلية في البلاد، عندما طُبع الفقر على جدران المباني، وأذهبَ القحط ملامح البشر، وحلّ الجنون والخرف في عقولهم، عندما كان ينازع الإنسان نفسه، ويتلوى من الأمراض النفسية!
تظهر قضية غريبة في أمريكا عام 1919، قضية الموت الأسود، وهو مهووس شطرنجي يواجه لاعبي الشطرنج رهانًا على حيواتهم! ففي خمس سنوات وصل عدد ضحايا جريمته إلى اثنين وستين قتيلًا! يتولى المحقق الإسباني «إيزكل فابيان» التحقيق في القضية في العام الخامس، وتزامنًا مع توليه التحقيق بعدة أشهر، تقع جريمة الموت الأسود الأقوى وذات الصيت المدوي، ليكون ضحيته الثالثة والستين الأستاذ الدولي الكبير «كاليب جوش» منافس بطل العالم السابق، ليبدأ المحقق إيزكل في التحري!
