يوجد السائل الزلالي أو السائل المزلق بين طرفي العظام في فراغ داخل المفصل، وهو بمثابة الزيت الذي يقوم بتشحيم المفاصل وعند إصابة المفصل قد يمتلئ هذا الفراغ بارتشاح مائي أو دموي. وللسائل قوام يشبه زلال البيض ويفرز من الغشاء الزلالي.
