لقد تعددت أنواع التلوث في البيئة المعاصرة بحيث أصبح التلوث مظهراً نشاهده يومياً في حياتنا بصرف النظر عن أماكن تواجدنا. ومن أنواع التلوث التي أصبحت مقلقة تلوث هواء المدن والمناطق الحضرية والتلوث الداخلي (في البيوت والمكاتب والمصانع) إضافة إلى التلوث الصناعي. وقد أجمع العلماء بأن هناك آثاراً خطيرة على صحة الإنسان نتيجة لتعرضه للملوثات الناتجة عن التنمية والصناعة. ومن أخطر الملوثات الجوية على سبيل المثال ثاني أكسيد الكبريت والجسيمات الدقيقة القابلة للاستنشاق واكاسير النيتروجين وأول أكسيد الكربون والرصاص والمواد الكيموضوئية المؤكسدة.
ويشير تقرير حديث لبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة إلى أن أكثر من (900) مليون شخص يتعرضون يومياً إلى أخطار التلوث الناجم عن ثاني أكسيد الكبريت الذي ينبعث منه مائة مليون طن يومياً والذي يسبب حساسية في الجهاز التنفسي واللهاث وإعاقة عمل الرئتين، إضافة إلى زيارة قابلية الإنسان للأمراض المعدية وتعرض الجهاز التنفسي للمرض، وقد يسبب ثاني أكسيد الكبريت أيضاً مرضاً مزمناً في الرئة أو تليفها. وفي بعض المدن والمناطق الحضرية-حيث تتواجد المصانع عادة-يعتبر تلوث الهواء بالكيماويات الخطرة أكبر مسبب لموت الأطفال.
