ما دار في خاطري قطّ أن ما كان سيكون! وأن بضعة مئات من الأميال ستصبح آلافاً كثيرة وسنوات مديدة.
وأن رحلة البحث عن وطنٍ جديدٍ تدرّ أرضه لبناً وعسلاً إلى طريق طويل ملؤه السم والعلقم، طريق لا نهاية له ولمحطاته التي تفيض بالبؤس والشقاء والألم.
عايشت خلال هذا الدردور اللامتناهي في ظلامه حياة الخوف والقلق والضياع والفقد والجوع والسجن تحت قنابل الحرب ورصاصها وفي المعسكرات والمخيمات وبين أكوام الثلج على الجبال وتحت مطر الغابات ومرارة قيظ الصحراء.
ما كان لي أن أعيد نبش ذاكرتي في إستعادة ماضٍ كان ومازال يؤلمني، لكني وفي كل مرة اسال فيها نفسي، هل كان ذلك يستحق كل الذي جرى لي؟ لا أدري ماذا أجيب، لكن الشيء الوحيد الذي أعرفه أني حلمت بمستقبل أفضل... وحاولت.
