لُقِّبَ الشاعر سلم بن عمرو بـ"الخاسر" واشتهر بهذا اللقب وأصبح علامة فارقة له عن غيره من شعراء عصره حتى صار لا يذكر سلم إلا والخسران إلى جانبه، يلازمه في حياته ولا يتخلص منه حتى بعد مماته، واللافت في شبابه أنه كان تقياً ورعاً ثم انقلب على نفسه فأصبح مستهتراً ماجناً متظاهراً في خلاعته ومجونه مبذراً لماله ثمناً لشعره.
لم يصل من شعره سوى النذر اليسير، ولكن يستشف مما تحدر إلينا أنه كان من شعراء القصور ومن ندماء الكبراء والعظماء في عصره. وقد تبنه المحقق أن معظم قصائده جاءت تقليدية في أغراضها مبتورة وغير مكتملة في مطلعها أو خواتمها.
وهذا الكتاب يقدم بحثاً شاملاً عرض فيه أخبار هذا الشاعر العباسي والظروف المرافقة للبيئتين الاجتماعية والأدبية اللتين عاشهما. وقد درس المحقق شعره باحثاً في موضوعاته وأغراضه بهدف تقصّي خصائصه الفكرية والفنية، وقد أضاف ملحقاً لكتابه تناول فيه ديوان سلم الخاسر الشعري.
