يقول أحمد أمين عن هذا الكتاب الممتع: طُلب إلىَّ أن أضع كتابا عن هارون الرشيد، فاغتبطت بهذا الطلب لأنني أحبه، وربما كان سبب حبي له أنه رجل عاطفي ذواق، يخضع للمؤثرات الوقتية، فيصلى مائة ركعة كل يوم ويحج ماشيا، ويهيم ــ من ناحية أخرى ــ بالجمال والغناء ومجالس الشراب. ويحدثه أبو العتاهية حديث الزهد فيبكى حتى تخضل لحيته، ويقول له ابن أبى مريم نكتة فيضحك حتى يستلقى على قفاه، ويرضى عن البرامكة فيطلق لهم العنان، ويغضب عليهم فينكِّل بهم أشد النكال. ورجل كهذا يكون ــ عادة ــ صريحا صادقا.. وأحبه أيضا لأنه أعلى شأن الشرق في الغرب. فكلما ذُكر هارون الرشيد، تخيل الغربيون الشرق بفتنته العجيبة وجاذبيته الساحرة، والسبب في ذلك كتاب ألف ليلة وليلة وما أضفت عليه علاقته بشارلمان من فخفخة وإجلال، وتوالى الوفود منه وإليه، وحركة التجارة بين الشرق والغرب في أيامه إلى غير ذلك. كل هذا ونحوه، جعله محبوبا عالي الذكر بعيد الصيت، وقد عمدت إلى كتابته بأسلوب عصري سهل يناسب جمهور القراء، فلم أتعمق فيه تعمقا يجعله ثقيلا، ولا أغرقته بذكر المصادر كما يفعل الجامعيون ومن نحا نحوهم. والله يرزقه من الحظوة ما رزق الرشيد.
