قال جدّي القبيح الذي أعطاه الله قلباً طيباً على سبيل التعويض، لأخي الأكبر عندما ضربني على ظهري بعودِ قصبٍ طري، وأنا لم أزل صغيرة: يا بني، حين تكبر قليلاً، هنالك أمور عن النساء ينبغي عليك أن تفهمها جيداً، لن أخبرك بها، ولكن سأحكي لك حكايةً. صمت جدّي لحظةً، وكنت أحاول أن أطرد ذبابةً لعينةً لم تجد وجبةً دسمةً غير القذارة التي كان يمتلئ بها وجهي، فيما كان جدّي يلوّح بعصاهِ هنا وهناك، وكان يرسم عدّة دوائر وأشكال مبهمة، وأنا وأخي نتابعه باهتمامٍ وحرص شديدين، وبعد ذلك رسم أربعة خطوط متعرّجة على الأرض الرملية المنبسطة أمامه، وأضاف: حين رغب صانع الخزف الحقير الزواج من ابنة تاجر الذهب الحكيم، وكان ذلك في زمانٍ بعيدٍ يابُني، إذ لم يكن الناس يكترثون بمسألة الوقتِ كثيراً، كانوا لا يعرفون متى جاءوا، ومتى سيذهبون، ولكنهم يقطعون المسافة بين قدومهم والرحيل هرباً من الموت، وكلما أيقنوا أنهم قد أصبحوا بعيدين عنه، كلما كانوا أقرب في الواقع إليه.
