"كان إيكاروس، بطل الرواية، يسير في أحد الشوارع حينما هبّت العاصفة واقتلعت حجر الطاق من سطح أحد المنازل التي كان يسير بمحاذاتها فيسقط على رأسه، لينقل بعدها إلى المستشفى وهو مصاب بشرخ في الجمجمة يجعله يعاني من فقدان ذاكرة معكوس، إذ أصبح فجأة يتذكّر أكثر من اللازم ليجد نفسه ضائعاً في متاهة أماكن الطفولة وأشيائها.
تأخذ ذكريات إيكاروس بالتجسّد بشكل محسوس أمام ناظريه ليجد غرفته تضيق بكل أشياء الطفولة التي مرّت عليه حياته من طيور، عربات، أجهزة تلفزيونات قديمة، وأفراس نهر بلاستيكية كان قد نسيها منذ زمن بعيد.
ولكي يستطيع إيكاروس الحصول على بعض الهدوء بمنأى عن دماغه المضطرب وفوضى الأشياء المتصاعد في بيته، يسير متجوّلاً في شوارع كوبنهاغن مكتشفاً خريطتها التي تشابه صورة سينيّة للدماغ. وفي ذات يوم تنتقل أليس إلى شقة مقابلة للمبنى الذي يسكن فيه فتكون بمثابة البلسم الشافي لذاكرته، فقد كان بإمكانها أن تجعله ينسى ركام الأشياء التي جسّدتها ذاكرته والنهايات الفجائعيّة للأحداث التي مرّت عليه من قبل".
رواية "نظام الأشياء" عمل أدبي باهر يختلط فيه الواقع بالمثيولوجيا، الفلسفة والمشاعر، الحب والموت في جو من الغرائبيّة يجعله يضاهى أعمال كافكا إن لم يتفوّق عليها بالأناقة والشاعريّة.
