في هذا الكتاب، يحكي ميشيل مافيزولي عن الشغف، في مقابل العقلانية التي عفا عليها الزمن، والنظرية الاقتصادية المنتصرة، والتقدمية الجوفاء. ويتناول الفكر الاجتماعي، فيدقق في تداعيات العيش المشترك ويصرّ على التناقض بين السلطتين: الأفقية التي تفرزها الحكمة الشعبية، والعمودية المستمدة من الله أو من العقائد التوحيدية. كذلك يحلل، في سياق تفكيره في ما بعد الحداثة، الظاهرة التي أطلق عليها إعادة السحر إلى العالم، وفكرة أن ما بعد الحداثة تتسم بتراجع الفردية في المجتمعات الغربية، وبما عرّفه بـ «القبلية». ويشكّل هذان الموضوعان جوهر هذا الكتاب. يفترض مافيزولي أن العصر الذي نعيش فيه - ما بعد الحداثة - متجذر في الحاضر، وأن الحداثة التي أتينا منها كانت موجهة نحو المستقبل. ويصف تصور ما بعد الحداثة للوقت المثبت في التقاليد التي تنعم ببعد محلي أهلي، بأنه «دوري» و«يرشح بالحاضر»، وشرطه «التجذير الديناميكي»، ويدرسه في فصول الكتاب الثمانية. أخيرًا يحاول فهم دفق العاطفة في الحياة اليومية، وكيفية إيلاء أهمية للمجتمع الأهلي المثالي في سعيه لاستيعاب هذا التحول في الأنموذج.
