إن العادات عندما تسري في حياة الناس يتغلغل أثرها في نفوسهم حتى تصبح كأنما جبلت عليها، فيصعب اقتلاعهــا منها كما يصعب اقتلاع الأطواد الشم الرواسخ من الأرض، ولهذا يلقى المصلحون عنتا شديدا عندما يواجهون في مشروعهم الإصلاحي عادات متحكمة تنجذب إليها النفوس وتتفاعل معها الرغبات، وكم من عادة تتفشــى في الناس فتمتد من مجتمع إلى مجتمع من غير أن تستنكف منها النفوس أو يعترضها معارضون.
ومن العجيب سريان هذه العادات في الخاصة والعامة، وبين أولي العلم والجهلة، فلا تلقى استنكارا ولا تجد تحديا، وهذا إنما يعود إلى قابلية النفوس لتلقي كل جديد يســتهويها، إما لما تجــد فيه من التخلص من المســؤولية وتبعاتها، وإما لما تتصور فيه من راحة بسبب بعدها عن الإلتزام.
