يتفق المحدثون على جلالة نفع كتاب (الموطأ) للإمام أبي عبد الله مالك بن أنس، فهو الكتاب الذي اتفق أهل النقل قاطبة على أن الحديث إذا ثبت بروايته كان من الذروة العليا، من الصحة، وجملة ما في (الموطأ) من الأحاديث المرفوعة والآثار الموقوفة 1700 حديث، المسند فيها 600 حديث، والمرسل 222 حديثاً، والموقوف 617، ومن أقوال التابعين 275، وكان مالك قد جمع في "الموطأ" أولاً عشرة آلاف حديث، ثم صار ينظر فيها كل يوم وينقص منها إلى أن بقي هذا العدد.
في هذا الكتاب يعتني السيد محمد بن علوي ابن عباس المالكي بكتاب "الموطأ" فيجمع رواياته وبالتحديد كتاب "المخلص للقابسي" الذي هو في الحقيقة رواية ابن القاسم للموطأ، والذي صنعه القابسي هو أنه رتبه ترتيباً على غير ترتيب الأصل المرتب على أبواب الفقه واقتصر فيه على حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وحذف ما سوى ذلك من الأقوال الفقهية.
وفي هذا الإطار علق محقق الكتاب كما يقول على الأحاديث بما يحلَ ألفاظها دون الدخول في فقه الحديث، وقابل النسخ بما توفر له من الأصول المخطوطة والمطبوعة، وبيَن في كل حديث تخريجه ومكانه في رواية يحيى لأنها هي المشهورة اليوم، والمتوفرة في أيدي الناس، وكتب مقدمة ترجم فيها لصاحب الأصل الذي هو ابن القاسم، وبيَن شيئاً مما يتعلق بروايته، ثم ترجم للقابسي صاحب "الملخص"، وبيَن شيئاً مما يتعلق بروايته، ثم ذكر أسانيده إلى "الموطأ" من طريق ابن القاسم صاحب الرواية.
