يعتبر كتاب الموطأ من أقدم كتب السنة وأصحها، ويتميز بكون جامعه إماماً مجتهداً، وبقصر الأسانيد، وبإثبات الإمام مالك لفتاويه وفتاوى السلف بعد الأحاديث وبالبلاغات، وقد رتبه على الأبواب الفقهية . وقد سمعه منه خلق كثير ومن أدق رواياته رواية الإمام محمد بن الحسن صاحب ابي حنيفة . جاء فيها 1008 أحاديث رواه محمد وأثبت بعد كثير منها قوله الفقهي في المسألة وقول امامه أبي حنيفة ان خالفه ومذاهب الصحابة . وقد قدم المحقق الكتاب ووضع عليه بعض التعليقات اللغوية والفقهية وغيرها.
