يروي الكتاب، الذي أملاه الروح إيمانويل على الوسيط البرازيلي فرانسيسكو كانديدو شافيير عام 1939، قصة حياة السناتور الروماني المتعجرف بوبليوس لينتولوس (إحدى تجسدات إيمانويل) في القرن الأول الميلادي.
ينتقل بوبليوس مع عائلته إلى فلسطين بحثاً عن علاج لابنته المريضة بالجذام. هناك يلتقي بالسيد المسيح، الذي يشفي ابنته معجزةً، ويدعوه إلى تغيير حياته والتخلي عن كبريائه.
لكنه يفوّت الفرصة بسبب غروره وتمسكه بالسلطة والتقاليد الرومانية، فيتورط في مؤامرات وأحداث مؤلمة تؤثر على عائلته.
تتحول زوجته ليفيا إلى المسيحية وتصبح من أتباع يسوع، بينما يظل بوبليوس أسيراً لعنجهيته.
يتناول الكتاب مواضيع مثل الكبرياء مقابل التواضع، والفرص الروحية الضائعة، والتأثير الكبير لتعاليم يسوع على الحياة اليومية في عصر الإمبراطورية الرومانية.
يصف الحياة الاجتماعية والسياسية في روما وفلسطين، وصراعات السلطة، والاضطهاد الأول للمسيحيين، مع التركيز على دروس الرحمة والغفران والتطور الروحي.
هي أول رواية تاريخية في سلسلة "روايات إيمانويل"، ويُعتبر من أهم الكتب الروحانية الإسپيريتية، يجمع بين التاريخ والتعليم الروحي العميق.
