في هذا الكتاب يسأل الكاتب عبد الله علي العجمي: من أهم الخلفاء الراشدون؟ ويجيب عن طريق عرض لأحاديث أهل السّنة والجماعة تارة، وأحاديث أهل البيت تارة أخرى ويترك للقارئ الحكم بما يعرضه من نصوص، يقول المؤلف: ورد مصطلح "الخلفاء الراشدون" في روايات وردت عن طريق أهل السّنة ضمن كلام منسوب إلى النبي الأكرم صلى الله عليه وسلم، ففي الرواية عن العرباص بن سارية قال:... وعليكم بسنتي وسنة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديين، فتمسكوا بها وعضوا عليها بالنواجدّ، وإياكم ومحدثات الأمور، فإن كل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة".
وهنا يعتبر المؤلف أن لا شيء يؤكد أن الخلفاء الراشدين (أبو بكر، وعمر، وعثمان وعلي) فقط، وأن الخلفاء الراشدون هم إثنا عشر ويورد الأحاديث والروايات التي تؤكد مقولته ومنها من "مسند إمام الحنابلة أحمد بن حنبل" أن النبي صلى الله عليه ولسلم قال في حديث: "... "إثنا عشر كعدة نقباء نبي إسرائيل" وحديث آخر روى بسنده عن عامر بن سعد بن أبي وقاص قال الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم: "لا يزال الدين قائماً حتى تقوم الساعة أو يكون عليكم اثنا عشر خليفة كلهم من قريش".
وهكذا يرد في هذا الكتاب جملة روايات مصرحة بأسماء الأئمة للقول بأنهم من عترة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم "إن وصيي علي بن أبي طالب، وبعده سبطابي الحسن والحسين تتلوه تسعة أئمة من صلب الحسين".
ومهما يكن من أمر الكتاب ومؤلفه وحججه، فإن ما يرد فيه من أحاديث بأسانيدها هي كنز ثمين بالمعلومات والأدلة والرؤى تبعث على النقاش والتفكر والتدبر والإيمان بأن المسلمون سواء أياً كان مذهبهم وجنسهم، يبتغون كلام الله ورضاه في الدنيا والآخرة.
