إن الدراسة التي قام بها بن وايدر، والتي شارك فيها الكاتب الاميركي د. هابغود، ليست “قصة خيال علمي” كتبت بسرعة لاطلاق “الاثارة” في السوق.
فمن خلال جدية الاعمال الحاصلة، ومصداقية النتائج التي تم التوصل اليها، فانها تستحق، على العكس، الانتباه والتفحص، ومن الواجب ان تثير النقاش، باعتبار ان موت نابليون “مسألة ما زالت مطروحة للبحث وان اعطاء التسمم الجرمي بالزرنيخ الذي كان احتمالا ممكنا، برهن عليها بن وايدر بانها حقيقة كاملة، فعرض الدليل الذي يشكل اساس هذا النقاش الدائر اليوم. ان دور المؤرخ الحقيقي، ليس مجابهة الفرضيات القائمة، في الواقع، وانما على العكس، في البحث فيما اذا كانت تتفق فعلا، مع الواقع، الذي جرى، سواء ارضى من رضي او اغضب من غضب.
وبهذه المناسبة، فانه ليس من الواضح، ان اسباب الاعتقاد بموت نابليون مسموما امير غير مناسب لشخص من بطانته. ولا يبدو ان مجد هذه الشخصية سيتأثر من تلك النهاية التي تبدو اقل بشاعة من موت ناجم عن المرض.
يطرح (بن وايدر ود. هابغود) اسئلة واجوبة مناسبة لا يمكن ان يقدم لكل منها بكلمة “مستحيل” او مضحك” ذلك ان الاقناع، يجب ان يستند على برهان دقيق بالنقيض. ان التعلق الذي يدعيه الكثيرون ازاء هذا الشخص غير العادي، نابليون، جدير بهذا البحث وهذا النقاش. وكما قال فولتير:”اذا كان من الواجب علينا مجاملة الاحياء، فالواجب يقتضي قول الحقيقة عن الموتى
