هذا سفر نابليون الأول (رب الحرب) كما لقبه بعض المؤرخين. دفعني إلى وضعه ما أراه من محبي التاريخ في تقديسهم سيرة ذلك البطل العظيم، الذي خبر الدهر وكبح جماحه، وبني له مجداً لا يمحوه كر الغداة ومر العشي، لم أختر شطراً من سيرته، ولا من ناحية من حياته فحسب بل طرقت كثيراً من أسرار حياته أطوارها، ولامراء في أن السواد الأعظم يجد لذة وعبرة في مطالعة حبه "لجوزفين" وخطاباته الغرامية لها، مما يدهش لها قارئ سيرة رجل حربي شغف بالقتال وتلذذ بسفك الدماء. طباعه القسوة، وجبلته تعكير صفو السلام، كذا أوردت أعماله الحربية تلك التي شغلت جل أيامه وكانت سبباً في اذاعة صيته، وجعلت منه شخصية فذة مثالاً للجرأة.
