لم يلق فنان في حياته من العنت والإهمال كما لقي فنان الشعب الأول سيد درويش، كما لم يكتب عن أحد كما كتب عنه. وربما يكون محبوه أو مبغضوه قد بالغوا فيما كتبوا عنه، إلا أن مكانته وأثره في تطور الموسيقى العربية عموماً والمصرية خصوصاً محالاً يمكن إنكاره البته. فقد جاءت موسيقاه معبرة بصدق عن انتمائه للبيئة المصرية البسيطة. وقد أجاد في التعبير عن مكونات نفسه فعاش أفراح شعبه وأتراحه. كما كان رائداً للمسرح الغنائي المصري بحق ورغم أن الكثيرين قد تناولوا شخصيته بالبحث والدراسة وأفادوا في الحديث عن جوانب موهبته إلا أنهم لا بد وأن يكونوا قد أغفلوا جانباً ما لم يتطرقوا إليه.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا وضعه حسن درويش ابن الموسيقار وأراد من خلاله أن يسلط الضوء على جوانب لم يلتفت إليها الباحثون. فعمد إلى جمع ما صدر عن أبيه في الصحافة المصرية وأعمل فيها مبدع التحليل والنقد فجاء عمله تحفة فنية رائعة.
يتطرق المؤلف إلى الفترة التي سبقت ظهور سيد درويش ويبحث في عوامل انحراف الأغنية كما يتحدث عن الغزو الاستعماري الفني ثم نشأة سيد ر درويش والأحداث السياسية والاقتصادية التي رافقت ذلك وأثرها على شخصيته وتكوينه الفني. كما يتحدث عن علاقة أبيه بالصحافة والشعر ويتطرق إلى أثر الثورة 1919 عليه وعلى مولد النشيد الوطن المصرى، والأغنية الوطنية عموماً. ثم يختتم الكتاب بدراسات خطتها أقلام بعض الأدباء والصحفيين المصريين أمثال عبد العزيز البشري ومحمد حسن الشجاعي وآخرون.
