إن مفهوم الأيديولوجيا ليس مفهوماً عادياً يعبّر عن واقع ملموس فيوصف وصفاً شافياً، وليس مفهوماً متولداً عن بديهيات فيجد حداً مجرداً، وإنما هو مفهوم اجتماعي تاريخي، وبالتالي يحمل في ذاته آثار تطورات وصراعات ومناظرات اجتماعية وسياسية عديدة. انه يمثل "تراكم معانٍ"، مثله في هذا مثل مفاهيم محورية أخرى كالدولة أو الحرية أو المادة أو الإنسان... من يستطيع اليوم أن يعطي للدولة تحديداً شكلياً أو قطعياً بدون رجوع إلى التاريخ والاجتماع والاقتصاد والنظريات السياسية؟.
وهكذا يستلزم كل نقاش حول مفهوم الأيديولوجيا الاطلاع على أصله وصيرورته وبالتالي على المذاهب الفلسفية المتعلقة به. وضمن هذه المنهجية حاول الباحث في دراسته هذه رسم الخطوط العريضة لخلفيات المفهوم متوخياً توضيح المعاني المضمنة فيه والتي تستولي على ذهن كل من يستعمله اليوم، حتى ولو لم يكن داعياً بها. وغاية الباحث التمكن عن استعمال مفهوم الأيديولوجيا في الحدود اللائقة به، إن لم يكن بالإمكان الاستغناء عنه بالمرة.
