"...ولقد تم التوصل ببطء وصعوبة بالغين إلى الاقتناع بشرعية وجود هذه الدولة وهذا الوطن، من قبل السياسيين اللبنانيين أنفسهم بداية وعلى اختلاف مشاربهم، مثل رياض الصلح الذي تحول من عروبة عابرة للدولة الوطنية إلى أن أصبح أحد رمزي الاستقلال اللبناني المنفتح، إلى عبد الحميد كرامي الذي تحول من رافض للكيان إلى مشارك فيه وصائب سلام وكمال جنبلاط. وهذا يشمل ازدواجية صورة الإمام المخطوط موسى الصدر وصولاً إلى رفيق الحريري الذي ختم حياته كأكبر ضحايا "وحدة المسارين" عندما أراد قيام الدولة اللبنانية واستقلالها مجدداً.
لذا، ومهما قيل حول السنوات الثلاث الماضية التي تلت اغتيال الشهيد الحريري، ومع صعوبة اللحظة الراهنة وعدم وضوح منحى اتجاه الأوضاع إن في لبنان أو في المنطقة، فلا بد أن نلاحظ حصول عدة تطورات مهمة وذات معنى طالت معنى لبنان ووظيفته وشرعية وجوده كدولة وطنية ناجزة بما زعزع المفاهيم التي كانت سائدة حول عدم شرعية وجوده وكيانيته المصطنعة.
ربما ليس جديداً القول أن الكيان اللبناني في خطر، فهو مهدد في وجوده منذ لحظة تكونه لأسباب عديدة ومتنوعة. لكن المفارقة حالياً أن هذا الكيان يتعرض للخطر الشديد مرة أخرى أيضاً وأيضاً في الوقت الذي لم يعد فيه هذا اللبنان ذلك الكيان المصطنع منقوص الهوية والمشكوك في عروبته. لقد صار وجود النموذج اللبناني بما هو عليه مطلباً وضرورة لأبنائه وللعالم".
