الدكتورة منى فياض، رئيسة قسم علم النفس في الجامعة اللبنانية والأستاذة فيه، أعدت هذا الكتاب في الأصل من أجل التدريس الجامعي في الميدان التربوي، من أجل تغطية مجالات تربوية غير متوفرة بكثرة في اللغة العربية، ولذلك نجد فيه فصولاً بحثية مثل العنف أو الكومبيوتر أو المشاكل التربوية في المدارس... كما نجد فصولاً مترجمة عن "التحليل النفسي للمدرسة كمؤسسة" أو "الحياة المدرسية ودخول الطفل إلى المدرسة".
إن تعميم المدرسة كمؤسسة في العالم الحديث جعل من التربية مهنة مركزية في دول العالم المتقدم، وبدرجة أقل في العالم الثالث الذي ننتمي إليه. وهي تطمح إلى تربية الطفل وجعله حراً! والتحدي الأكبر الذي تطرحه التربية عبر عنه كانط بقوله: "كيف يمكن الجمع بين الخضوع للضغط مع موهبة الاحتفاظ بالحرية؟".
ولقد تحولت المدرسة منذ نهاية القرن التاسع عشر إلى مركز أساسى للتعبير عن هذه المهمة المستحيلة التي تهدف إلى إنتاج المجتمع عن طريق تعليم المواطنين.
ومن هنا ضرورة القيام بعمل كبير على صعيد التربية في العالم العربي. فأكثر أنظمتنا فشلاً هو نظامنا التربوي الذي سمح بوجود 70 مليون أمي في بداية الألفية الثالثة.
