كان "معبد" من أحسن الناس غناء وأجودهم صنعة، ومن أحسنهم خلقاً، وهو فحل المغنين، إمام أهل المدينة فى الغناء، وفى معبد يقول الشاعر:
أجاد طويس والشربحي بعده وما قصيات السبق إلا لمعبد
ولمعبد أصوات كثيرة نادرة، ومنها صوته فى شعر أبى قطيفة:
القصر فالنخل فالجماء بينهما أشهى إلى القلب من أبواب جيرون
وله سبعة أصوات مشهورة يسميها "المدائن" لكثرة ما فى كل منها من الصنعة والعمل، ولكل منها اسم يخصها، فأول هذه يسميه "الدوامة" لكثرة ما فيه من الترجيع، والثاني يسميه "المنمنم" أى المزركش المنقوش، والثالث يسميه "المتبختر". والخامس يسميه "مقطع الأثفار"، ومما يعد فى مدن معبد، صوته:
ودع هريرة إن الركب مرتحل وهل تطيق وداعاً أيها الرجل
ثم صوته:
أسعدانى بدمعة أسراب من شؤون كثيرة التسكاب
وغير ذلك من أصواته النادرة التلحين.
