السيرة الذاتية: إحدى الفنون الأدبية، وهو حكي إستعادي نثري يقوم به شخص واقعي، يتحدث فيه عن حياته الفردية وتاريخ شخصيته، أو هي سيرة شخص يرويها بنفسه، وأن تكون مترابطة على أساس من الوحدة والإتساق في البناء، وتستطيع أن تنقل التجارب وخبرات الحياة اليومية.
إن من أبسط الدوافع التي تدفع الإنسان إلى كتابة سيرته الذاتية رغبته الفطرية في تعريف الآخرين بذاته، وعندما يشعر بالتميّز يقوى لديه الإحساس بأنه إنسان يستحق معرفة الآخرين به وتقديره، وقد يظهر هذا الشعور في حالات مثل الإحساس بالشيخوخة والعجز والمرض وبأن حياته تصلح أن تكون عبرة للآخرين، أو الرغبة بالدفاع عن النفس في حالة إتهامه بالخمول والتقصير، فيكون عمله تبريراً لدفع ذلك الإتهام.
هذه السيرة تنقلنا في رحلة زمانية مكانية تبدأ من بغداد ومن إحدى محلاتها القديمة الوشاش إلى الحلة ودروبها الضيقة وحاراتها المغلقة، ومنها إلى الموصل الحدباء الوادعة على دجلة، وإلى أربيل وقلعتها الشامخة، ثم إلى جبال عقرة ودينارته، ومنها إلى بغداد فالبصرة وبيوتها وشناشيلها، وشواطئ شط العرب ونخيله الباسقة، وسفته الراسية.
عبر أحداث ممتدة من المعهد الملكين فالعهد الجمهوري، ثم عهد الإحتلال وما بعده، وما جرى فيها من أحداث سياسية تبدلت فيها الوجوه، وتغيرت خلالها النفوس، ولكن بغداد ظلت صامدة بوجه المحتلين والمعتدين.
وبعد فإن هذا الكتاب يعد مرجعاً للقراء والطلبة والباحثين، وهو إضافة نوعية في مجال فن السيرة الذاتية، وهي إحدى الفنون الأدبية الزاخرة بالحيوية.
