"مرايا الذاكرة" نوع أدبي حمال أوجه، فضّل الكاتب علي أومليل أن يَسِمَ نصّه بـ "سرد" بدلاً من "رواية" لكونه لا يتقيد بالحبكة وترابط الشخصيات والفضاء واعتماد المخيلة .. فهو هنا يسلك سبيل الذاكرة المفتوحة ويقنص منها ما يلح عليه، ما هو نابع من حياته الخاصة، أو متصل بالحياة العامة، أو مستوحى من زوادة التاريخ الذي له امتداد الحاضر.
في الكتاب ثلاثين فصلاً، هي مرايا مصفوفة إلى جانب بعض، وكل واحدة منها تعكس ملامح فضاء مختلف اختزنته ذاكرة السارد عبر المعيشي أو المقروء أو المرئي ... وليست هذه المرايا مقطوعة الصلة ببعضها، بل هناك نوعاً من اللُحمة فيما بينها، تتمثل في تلك المراوحة بين السرد والتأمل،وهو تأمل كثيراً ما ينصب على ثيمات تتردد بوتيرة لافتة لتشكل محوراً عن الزمن والموت، عن التصوف والعقل، وعن سيرورة التاريخ ومفارقاته، فمن مرايا الذاكرة يستحضر المؤلف حالة التصوف الذي أعلن الجهاد على النفس وعلى الجسد يقول: "يولج المتصوف الموت في الحياة ويولج الحياة في الموت. يتذكر الموت على مدار الحياة. يروّضه وهو حيوان كاسر ليصير أليفاً، يستحضره قبل الحضور حتى إذا جاءه انساب فيه مجتازاً عتبته في طمأنينة ...".
وعلى هذا النحو تسير سردية "مرايا الذاكرة" ، جانب منها يتصل بالسيرة الذاتية، وآخر يشتمل على تأملات لها علاقة بأسئلة الموت والحياة والوجود والتاريخ، تكشف مضامينها عن تاريخ وثقافة "المغرب العربي". ومن قناعات المؤلف المعرفية، وقيمه الإيدلوجية وماله علاقة بما ادخرته ذاكرته من قراءات وأسفار شكلت تجربته في الحياة والأدب والفن معاً.
