يشكل الموت الجزء الناقص من الحياة الذي لا تكتمل نهايتها إلا به، ويتخذ أشكالاً شتى، ومراتب مختلفة، وحالات متعددة، ولكن فوزي ذبيان هنا يلوَن الموت بفصول السنة ويفرد له مساحة واسعة في نصه (مراتب الموتى) فماذا أراد أن يقول عن هذا المجهول الذي ينتظره كل واحدٍ منا شاء أم أبى؟
تتحدث الرواية عن فكرة الموت، باستخدام سارد واحد اختاره الراوي ليكون قناعاً، اسمه (ابراهيم) الذي بلغ الحادية والسبعين من العمر، ولا يجيد القيام إلا بعمل واحد هو غسل الأموات، إنها مهنة ورثها عن جده لأبيه الذي مات منذ أن كان هو في الثامنة عشرة من العمر، وعلى الرغم من مضي عقود على موت جده، إلا أنه لا يزال يلمح في ذاكرته تلصص عينا جده العجوز على كل جثة يقوم بغسلها فوق سرير الرخام، بل أكثر من ذلك فلسفته حول الموت "موتى الربيع يا ابراهيم أقرب إلى طبائع النساء"، بهذا أخبره جده يوماً أثناء غسله شاباً كان يدمع فوق سرير الرخام. نعم، فهو يا ابراهيم (...) الأيام ستريك من يكونوا موتى الربيع"، أما أولئك الذين يموتون في الصيف أو الخريف: "فلا تأبه لهم كثيراً يا ابراهيم، فهم أقرب إلى فكرة الإحياء وظنَهم عمن هم الأموات". موتى الخريف والصيف قال جدَه... لا يجيدون متعة المكوث بين بين، إنهم فقط إما أموات وإما أحياء.
بهذا الخطاب، يشكل الموت الوجه الآخر للحياة عند فوزي ذبيان و"الحياة هي الجانب الخارجي للموت" كما يقول الشاعر البرتغالي فرناندو بيسوا، فالجميع سوف يواجه هذه النهاية المأسوية، على صعوبة هذه النهاية.
