اقتضى التطور الاقتصادي ضرورة استخدام النقود كوسيلة للتبادل لحل مشكلة المقايضة التي كانت تحد إلى حد كبير من توسع النشاط الاقتصادي. وعندما ظهر استخدام النقود على نطاق واسع بواسطة الصيارف نشأت البنوك ثم تطورت حتى أصبحت إدارة هامة من أدوات النظام الاقتصادي.
ويهدف هذا الكتاب الأكاديمي لمعاونة الطالب في كلية الاقتصاد والتجارة وكذلك في الكليات التي تدرس هذه المادة في مقررها الأكاديمي، وهو يحتوي على بابين الباب الأول جاء في النقود والنظم النقدية وهو يشتمل على ماهية النقود ووظائفها وأنواع النقود والنظم النقدية. ويتناول الباب الثاني النظام المصرفي وهو يشتمل على نشأة وتطور الفن المصرفي، وخلق نقود الودائع، ودراسة موجزة عن ميزانية البنوك التجارية الأربحية والسيولة والبنوك المركزية وتطور النظام المصرفي المصري.
ثم عودة على بدء بالنسبة لموضوع النقود فتعالج الدراسة قيمة النقود والنظريات النقدية الحديثة ثم الآثار الاقتصادية للتغيرات في قيمة النقود والسياسة النقدية. وفي مجال بحث أثر تغير قيمة النقود على الدخل تم تناول دور الأرقام القياسية في استبعاد أثر تغير الائمان والنقود والدورة التجارية والمؤسسات النقدية الدولية بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية.
