يروي الكتاب مذكرات اللواء فؤاد عارف (1913-2010)، ويسجل فيه وقائع حياته منذ نشأته في كردستان أيام الحرب العالمية الأولى، ومعايشته لانتفاضة الأكراد بقيادة الشيخ محمود عام 1919، وجلوسه على مقاعد الدراسة زميلا للأمير غازي، ومرافقته بعد انتقال العرش إليه خلفا لأبيه الملك فيصل، ثم دوره في الثورة وتبوئه مناصب كثيرة خلال العهد الجمهوري.
وقد توزعت المذكرات على جزأين الجزء الأول بسبعة فصول، تناولت طفولته وصباه ومرحلة التلمذة في الكلية العسكرية مع الامير غازي مرافقا له، ثم المرحلة ما بعد الملك غازي، وثورة 14 تموز، و(ثورة) 14 رمضان كما يسميها، اما الجزء الثاني من المذكرات فتتضمن ذكريات عن أحداث مهمة في تاريخ العراق، لعل ابرزها (لغز مقتل ناصر الحاني) الذي كان وزيرا لخارجية العراق بعد انقلاب تموز 1968 واتفاقية آذار 1970 ومحاولات اغتيال القائد بارزاني بعد تلك الاتفاقية، كما توقف اللواء عارف عند لقاءاته الواسعة مع العديد من الزعماء والسياسيين العرب أمثال: جمال عبد الناصر، عبد الرحمن عارف، وعبد الله سلوم السامرائي، وكمال جنبلاط وصدام حسين.
