لتكمن المذكرات كمذكرات فؤاد عارف أو ليقلع الناس عن كتابة المذكرات، وذلك يعود إلى سمات بارزة في كاتب هذه المذكرات، الذي رضع لبان الأخلاق من آبائه وأجداده، فأبوه وجده وأمه وخاله من علية القوم الأكراد في العراق، علموه الإخلاص بأرع معانيه، والاستقامة في كل تصرفاته، وتبلورت هذه السمات في تربيته العسكرية يوم دخل المدرسة الحربية وكان رفيقه على مقعد الدراسية العسكرية الملك غازي بن الملك فيصل الأول الذي تسلم العرش بعد وفاة والده جلالة الملك فيصل الأول.
أصبح رفيق الدراسة ملك العراق المفدى، وأضحى فؤاد المرافق لرفيق الدراسة الملك، فتجلى إخلاصه لملكيه بأسمى معانيه، وخوفه عليه بأعلى ما يكون الخوف على محبوب الشعب كله.
رافقه في حياته كلها في يقظته ومنامه، وعزه، والمؤامرات التي حيكت ضده، يسهر الليالي لا ينام لحظة واحدة خوفاً على مليكه من يد الغدر. وأثمر الإخلاص والواجب والحب في قلب فؤاد لغازي شعوراً أنه المسؤول عن الملك إذا ألم به مكروه.
وبأدلة الملك والأسرة الحاكمة حباً بحب وتقديراً بإخلاص، وعرف فؤاد كل صغيرة وكبيرة عن غازي فكانت مذكراته أشبه بصورة طبق الأصل واغتيل غازي فكان لذلك تأثيره الكبير على فؤاد الذي كان يعرف الجهة التي تضمر العداء لغازي ولشعب العراق.
وعايش الفترة الزمنية بعد غازي وحتى قضي على الأسرة الهاشمية جمعاء، وبعد ثورة 14 تموز 1958 تسلم مسؤوليات عديدة نائباً للوزراء ووزيراً.
تمتاز مذكرات فؤاد عارف أنها صورة لمرحلة طويلة من حياة العراق، وأنها تمتاز بصدق وإخلاص لنفسه وبلاده، وأن كل ما قاله كان نابعاًَ من اصالته ووجدانه.
فؤاد، رجل لا كالرجال، ومذكراته تاريخ شعب في فترة طويلة من عمر الزمن وشرائح مختلفة من الشعب العراقي، اتسمت بصدق اللهجة والمعلومات وأهم ما يعجب في الرجل أنه كتب في مذكراته ما تأكد منه، وقال عما لم يعرفه قائلاً: لا أعرف والله أعلم.
