مدرس تحت الصفر هو صورة حية نابضة لما آل إليه حال التعليم في معظم بلادنا العربية، فإن كنت مغربيًا أو مصريًا أو يمنيًا أو سودانيًا، فستشعر أن ما يتحدث عنه الكاتب يمس جزءً ا من واقعك، وليس بغريب عنك، حتى لو اختلفت التفاصيل. وأقول جزء من واقعك؛ لأن واقع التعليم في معظم البلاد العربية قد انقسم بين تعليم فاره يُقدَّم للقادرين على دفع مصروفاته، وتعليم حكومي لا يفي بالغرض غالبًا، وإن تفاوتت مستوياته بين مناطق بلادنا المختلفة، خاصة بين الحضر والريف. الكتاب سيرة مدرس منذ أن أخذ القرار الصعب بالالتحاق بمعهد تكوين إعداد المعلمين، على خلاف رغبته، واستجابة لظروفه المادية الصعبة، وتمتد عبر سنوات، ليحكي لنا عبرها حال ذلك التكوين، ثم حال مدارسنا ومدرسينا في المناطق النائية، مازجًا ذلك بصراعاته النفسية بين أحلامه وآماله التي تبخرت أو كادت تتبخر بقبوله الوظيفة، وبين واقعه الأليم الذي أبى أن يخفف عنه ألم مفارقة تلك الأحلام. لكن الكتاب على ذلك ليس من أدب السير أو التراجم، بل هو شكل فريد من أشكال الأدب، لا هو بالسيرة الخالصة، ولا هو بالوصف التقليدي للوقائع، ولعله أشبه ما يكون بـ يوميات نائب في الأرياف لكاتبنا الكبير توفيق الحكيم، التي وصف لنا فيها جزء من واقع الريف المصري مطلع القرن العشرين من خلال سرد بعض القصص التي كان الحكيم شاهدًا عليها أثناء عمله في السلك القضائي مطلع شبابه، وبعض تلك القصص كان يتعلق بالظروف المعيشية الصعبة التي اُضطر إلى التعايش معها في الريف، وبعضها الآخر والأهم كان يتعلق بالمنظومة الإدارية الفاسدة التي تفتقد القدرة على تحقيق العدالة المنشودة للفلاحين.
