وقد اختار المؤلف لمجنون بني عامر اسماً واحداً من بين الأسماء الكثيرة التي اتلف فيها الرواة (هو قيس بن الملوح) ثم كنى عنه في بضع مواضع بأبي المهدي، واختار لحياة قيس من بين رواياتها المختلفة، أسلسها وأجراها مع المنطق، إن قيساً وليلى نشآ في بيتين من أشرف بيوت بن عامر، فتعارفا طفلين، فتوادا فاستحالت مودتهما غراماً مع الأسام، ثم شبب بها قيس في شعره، فحيل بينها وبينه.
