كيف للقارئ أن يحار وهو في نص أحمد علبي وهذا الكتاب العريق والمعتق الذي أخذ بالجملة العربية فتاة إلى أقصاها من الجزالة والرونق والأصالة، حتى لغدا بها صاحب أسلوب يخصه وراح يعززه بالألوان والصفات والدلالات والشعاب وهكذا لا يحار القارئ أبداً في السياق، ولا في المعاني، ولا في الإنسكابات الموضوعية والذاتية، والمراجعات الكثيفة هنا وهناك، ولا في الطرائف والإجابات والمغازلات والانتقال من شأن إلى آخر. ومن مضمون إلى آخر.
ولعله كلاسيكي من هذا القبيل، يخرق في التراث ويغرف منه، ويذهب رجوعاً إليه وإياباً منه، ويصبه في قالب معاصر قائم على النسج الحميم فلا يكاد يشف إلى الضوء الباهر ويتصاعد منه، وإذا اللعبة في أبهى مسراها إلى الإبداع وفي أنها تكتسب الوعي والعقل والذكاء وفي ما تضعه على الورق، وما توقظه من أشكال التبادل بين الموضوع والعاكف عليه، بين المؤلف والينابيع، بين الساقي والشراب، والكأس والخمر.
