تعددت العلوم وكثرت نظرياتها وتطبيقاتها، والرياضيات كسائر تلك العلوم حتى وإن كانت أم العلوم، من حيث علاقتها بسائر العلوم وإعتماد العلوم كافة عليها، فلا غنى لأي علم عن الرياضيات ممثلة بما فيها من نظريات وتطبيقات وتجريدات.
وعلم الإحصاء الذي هو أحد فروع الرياضيات ومن الفروع الأساسية فيها، قد دخل عصب الحياة في كافة الميادين، فترى علم الإحصاء يغزو الميادين الطبية والإجتماعية والصناعية والزراعية، ومنها أيضاً الميادين التربوية التي يحتاج لها كل من يعمل فيها ممثلة بكافة أطراف التربية، وذلك كعلم نظري وتطبيقي يساعد أطراف العملية التربوية بصورة خاصة على التعامل مع المشكلات التربوية الناجمة عن الميدان التربوي بعناصره المتشعبة.
وقد جاء هذا الكتاب ليكون أحد المراجع التي تساعد في إستخدام علم الإحصاء في ميدان التربية، حيث تكون الكتاب من سبع فصول؛ تناول الفصل الأول منها نبذة عن علم الإحصاء ومراحل تطوره بالإضافة إلى بعض المفاهيم الإحصائية، أما الفصول الثاني والثالث والرابع من هذا الكتاب فقد تناول بشيء من التفصيل المتواضع كلا من التوزيعات التكرارية، والمقاييس الوصفية الإحصائية ممثلة بمقاييس النزعة المركزية، ومقاييس التشتت.
أما الفصل الخامس فقد تناول مفهوم الأرقام القياسية وطرق حسابها بإعتبارها أحد النماذج التطبيقية لإستخدام الإحصاء الوصفي، وتناول الفصل السادس الإرتباط والإنحدار الخطي ودراسة العلاقات الخطية ومدى إرتباط المتغيرات من خلال معامل الإرتباط الخطي بيرسون، ومعامل إرتباط الرتب سبيرمان، فضلاً عن شكل الإنتشار وطريقة المربعات الصغرى لتقدير معادلة خط الإنحدار.
وبالنسبة إلى الفصل السابع وهو الفصل الأخير من هذا الكتاب، فقد تكامل من حيث تناوله بعضاً من الأساليب الإحصائية المناسبة لتحليل البيانات والتعريف بالنظام الإحصائي SPSS الذي خصص للتحليل الإحصائي بسهولة ويسر، فضلاً عن برمجية الإكسل.
