هناك مقالٌ نُسبَ لنيتشه، يقول فيه ونحن نقتبس: "الألم هو المدرِّس الأفضل". ربَّما نتفق، أو نختلف، فلا يهم. إلاَّ أنَّنا نعترف أكيدًا بأنَّ الألم والشعور به هو جزءٌ لا يتجزَّأ من ميتافيزيقيا الحياة. وأنَّه أحد الأسباب المهمَّة في استمرار حياة البشر، حتَّى اليوم. وقد اتَّفق فلاسفة ومفكري عصر النهضة، كمونتين، ودي كارت، وهوبز، وغيرهم الكثير، بأنَّ شعور الألم، يعدُّ انفصالا عن الله والواقع، وأنَّ الغاية منه مثمرةٌ بنتائج مرجوَّةٍ، كوسيلة للتعلُّم أكثر عن جوانبه، وتطوُّر العقل البشريِّ، وصلاحه كنوعٍ من الانتقاء الطبيعي الذي بيَّنه داروِن في كتبه. وبذلك يصل الإنسانُ للفهم الأتمِّ لمعنى الألم، وكيفيَّة قلب الطاولة، من شيءٍ معذِّبٍ، ومؤشرٍ للهلاك، إلى دليلٍ للنجاة من مؤشراتٍ أخرى تهلك الإنسان!.
