يعد تشارلز بوكوفسكي ظاهرة إحتجاجية في الساحة الأدبية الأميركية، حيث اعتبر كاتباً تخريبياً، وذلك بحكم طبيعة الطرح التي تتضمنها كتاباته، وذلك بحكم طبيعة الطرح التي تتضمنها كتاباته، إلى جانب طبيعة سلوكه الإجتماعي الذي لم يرضخ لمقوّمات الأديب المقبول إجتماعياً.
ورواية "مكتب البريد" هي الرواية الأولى لبوكوفسكي، وتحكي سيرته الذاتية مع بطله هنري تشيناسكي، أثناء فترة عمله في مكتب البريد على مدار 14 عاماً. وتغطي الرواية أعواماً من حياة بوكوفسكي: من عام 1952 حتى استقالته من مكتب البريد عام 1955، ثم عودته في عام 1958 حتى عام 1969 وفي هذه الأعوام، سيكتشف القارىء حياة بوكوفسكي كما عاشها: من علاقات نسائية، إلى سباقات الخيل، إلى عالم الكحول والتشرد والوحدة، إلى عالم الخدمة البريدية.
يسرد تشيناسكي – بوكوفسكي تاريخ العلاقة مع مصلحة البريد على مدار سنوات، وضمنها يجول على عالم متكامل الأطراف، يعجّ بالفضائح، والبيانات والأسرار من علاقاته مع المؤسسة ومع مرؤوسيه في الخدمة، وعرضه لنماذج متنوعة من الموظفين: هذا بادوفيل، وذاك متثاقف، وثالث نصّاب، فضلاً عن علاقاته النسائية الفاشلة، فولعه بالوحدة، والشرب، والتسكع.
مسألة فرز الرسائل ليست موضوعاً مثيراً لكتابة رواية، لكن بوكوفسكي ينجح في جعلها مثيرة للإهتمام، وهذا هو أكبر إنجاز قام به ككاتب في هذه الرواية؛ فهو يتعامل مع الواقع الرتيب بطريقة مكثّفة، باردة، ساخرة، يصف أحلك المشاهد وأكثرها حزناً على عجل، ويتأنى في وصف أكثر الأشياء رتابة، ويضحك فجأة، ويشتم فجأة، ويصمت في الأحداث التي تتطلب منه ردّ فعل وإنه ببساطة كاتب على عكس كل التوقعات.
حققت رواية "مكتب البريد" شعبية كبيرة ولاقت رواجاً في جميع أنحاء العالم. وترجمت إلى خمس عشرة لغة. هذه هي الترجمة العربية الأولى لرواية من روايات تشارلز بوكوفسكي نقلتها إلى العربية باعتناء كبير ريم غنايم، وقدمت لها بنبذة عن تاريخ حياة بوكوفسكي ومكانته الروائية وأعماله الإبداعية.
