الحكاية بأبسط تعاريفها اللغوية "ما يحكى ويقص، وقع أو تخيل" وقد عرفها الدكتور جبور عبد النور فقال: إنها فن في غاية القدم مرتكز على السرد المباشر المؤدي إلى الإمتاع والتأثير في نفوس السامعين. يتخذ موضوعاً له الأشياء الخيالية والمغامرات الغريبة، وقد يُعنى بالأمور الممكنة الوقوع أو الأحداث الحقيقية التي يعدل فيها الراوي، ويُعمم فيها أمالي خياله وإحساسه ومحصلات مواقفه من الحياة.
وفي هذا الكتاب من سلسلة "أروع ما قيل" يجمع "إميل ناصيف" ما قيل ليس في الحكايات فقط بل وأيضاً في الأقاصيص والروايات؛ إذ أن المؤلف لم يميز بينها وإنما أخذ بالتعريف الموسع للحكاية وهو "ما يحكي ويقص وَقَع أو تخيُّل". كما وقد حرص على أن تكون حكاياته متنوعة تنوع أذواق الناس ورغباتهم؛ وهي بمجملها تبعد عن النفس الكآبة وتأخذها إلى عالم الضحك والابتسامة والثقافة الأدبية.
