يقدم الكتاب عرضًا وسردًا تاريخيًا لسيرة لينين بالإضافة إلى وصف فترة ما قبل الثورة الروسية وظروفها وملابساتها ومقدماتها ثم قيامها وما ترتب على ذلك من حرب أهلية ثم موت لينين وبداية الخلاف حول المرشحين لخلافته وقيادة الاتحاد السوفييتي.
وكذلك يسرد الكتاب أفكار لينين الاقتصادية والسياسية ويعرض للقارئ نقد لينين لنظرياته ونقد الآخرين لها ورده على هذه الانتقادات، وقيادته للحزب ونضاله ثم قيادته للدولة بعد ذلك، ويتحدث كذلك عن تروتسكي ورؤيته للماركسية وعن قيام أول اتحاد سوفييتي.
وينتقل بعد ذلك بالقارئ للحديث عن الحرب العالمية الأولى وما صاحبها من أحداث وصراع، وكذلك يتطرق للحديث عن فساد القيصر رومانوف، والراهب راسبوتن ومقتله، والصراع بين الجيش الأحمر والجيش الأبيض، وعن الصدامات التي دارت داخل روسيا.
ثم يستعرض الكاتب رؤية لينين الجديدة وتغير بعض أفكاره وعن مكانة ستالين في الاتحاد السوفييتي، فيحلق الكاتب بين أيديولوجيات مختلفة وكل ذلك مصحوبًا برسوم وصور توضح النصوص المكتوبة وهو ما يميز الكتاب.
