خرج الطبيب من جحرة أخي ورأيته ينسحب ليتسلل إلى حجرتي، وجلس الرجل بجواري، ثم ربت على كتفي، وقال في صوت خافت: إنا في حاجة إلى معونتك لقد ذهب أخوك لم يحصل شئ وإنما أصابه نوع من الذهاب والغيبوبة الذي يحدث للمرء عندما يكون في حلم ولا شك أنك قد جربت الأحلام في نومك، نعم سيدي، حسناً إن أخاك قد استغرق في أحد هذه الأحلام، ولكن غيبته قد طالت، فاصبح من العسير إعادته إلى وعيه، وقد حاولنا جميعاً أن نعيد إليه رشده فبؤنا بالخيبة والفشل، أننا لا نعرف سبب ما يعانيه، ويخيل إلّي أنه قد يمكنك أن تصل إلى روحه الشاردة، فتعيدها إليه مرة أخرى، أتظن ذلك في استطاعتك؟ وكنت لا افهم معنى لما يقول فأجبته في تردد: لا، لا أدري ، حسناً، لا بأس من أن تحاول، والمسألة غاية في البساطة، فكل ما هو مطلوب منك أن تجلس بالقرب من فراش أخيك، ثم تهتف باسمه في همس كأنك تود أن تسر إليه حديثاً تخشىأ، يسمعه غيركما هذا هو كل ما في الأمرـ ودخلت الحجرة، وكان أبي وأمي يجلسان في أحد أطرافها، وقد بدأ عليهما الوجوم والقنوط ورأيت أخي مستلقياً في فراشه، وقد أغمض عينيه وبدا كأن قد ذهب حقاً! وأصابتني رجفة جعلت الأرض تميد تحت قدمي وجر الطبيب مقعداً بجوار الفراش، ثم أجلسني عليه وأشار إليّ أن أبتدئ.
