قصة مؤثرة تحمل بين تضاعيفها صوراً واضحة عن حياة أميركا الأولية، وتدور حول "لزى وبلدن" التي لم تعرف من هو "ووش ستون سيفر" سوى معرفة سطحية عابرة، عندما تلاقيا في منزل "كاليس وبانث" وراح يتعثر في كلامه طالباً يدها للزواج، لقد كان اجتمع بها من قبل مرة أو مرتين ولم يلبث وأياها سوى لحظات معدودة.
إن حاجته إلى زوجة لا تخرج عن كونها خطوة في سبيل إنجاز الخطة التي وضعها لحياته الخاصة عازماً على تتميمها، وأخيراً قبلت لزى، استجابة لصوت خفي في داخلها، وإحتراماً لشعورها نحوها، أن تزف إليه، وسرعان ما عقد قرانهما وقاما على الأثر بسفرة طويلة في الشتاء العاصف تحدق بهما الأخطار وارتحلا بعربة مسقوفة من "بنسلفانيا" ومرا بوادي "فرجينيا" وهدفهما أن يؤسسا بيتاً ومزرعة وعائلة في جبال "جورجيا" المقفرة التي تسمى: "بلوريدج مونتنز".
فقصة: "لنسكن هذا الوادي" إنما هي قصة المخاطر التي حاقت بذينك الزوجين، والخصام الذي احتدم بينهما من جهة وبين "ريف وسالي ويلليامز" اللذين صادفهما في الطريق من جهة ثانية واللذين ما لبثا أن تابعا السفر معهما.
هي قصة العاصفة الهوجاء التي كادت تجعل "ووش" مقعداً، وعائلة "يانسي" المدهشة بغرابة أطوارها...
